CHAPTER 10
âWhen?â Julie frowned.
âWhenever,â Martha replied. âHe must have said something to you at some stage before he wasââ she drew her finger across her throat.
Julie paled. âHow did you know?â
âI am president of the senior sleuthing club,â Martha replied airily. âI have a sense for these things.â She tapped the side of her nose.
âWell yes, he did say something to me. I didnât tell anyone becauseââ Julie glanced around the room but no one else was in earshot ââI was embarrassed.â
âWhat did he say?â Pru asked.
âRuff?â
âThat if I was ever tired of my husband, to come and visit him. I think you know what he was really saying.â
âYeah.â Martha nodded. âHuh. He was a bad guy.â
âOf course I told him there was no chance of that happening. I tried to be polite about it, and not tell him what I really thought about his ⦠offer.â
âBecause youâre a lady.â Martha nodded.
A pleased expression blossomed across Julieâs face. âMartha, thatâs one of the nicest things someone has said to me.â
âYouâre welcome.â Martha grinned. âBut itâs true. Pru here is a lady, although I call her a good girl. But anyway, did he say something else to you?â
âNo, not after I rebuffed his â whatever it was. That was on the day he was killed.â
âDid you tell the detective?â Pru asked.
âNo!â Julie looked shocked. âI didnât want him looking into my marriage â I mean, itâs not perfect, but there was no way I would ever be tempted to take up Daveâs offer â or anyone elseâs. I love my husband. I just hope my time away will make him realize he still loves me â and is willing to show it.â
âI hear you.â Martha nodded.
âI guess Iâd better get back to the hotel.â Julie looked downcast for a moment. âI thought Iâd enjoy my time away from home but now all I can think of is if my husbandâs organized the laundry and if heâs maxing out the credit card on takeout every night.â
âWhy donât you call him and find out?â Martha suggested.
âMaybe I will,â Julie replied after a moment.
âWould you like to have dinner with us?â Pru asked impulsively.
âRuff!â
âGood idea,â Martha declared.
âWell, it would be nice to have some company,â Julie began, âand you could tell me more about Gold Leaf Valley.â
âItâs a deal.â Martha grinned.
